Negotiating Creativity: Data‑Moshing Workshop
Our flagship workshop invites participants to explore contradictions through the process of datamoshing: manipulating video files to create glitches that reveal new visual narratives. Students work exclusively with open‑source tools and command‑line utilities, learning to embrace chance and negotiation in the creative process.
- Select up to eight CC0 videos depicting opposing concepts (e.g. virtual vs physical, urban vs rural)
- Convert footage to MPEG‑2 format using FFmpeg for easy frame manipulation
- Split videos into individual frames and creatively recombine them to produce glitched sequences
- Post‑process frames with sharpening, dithering and annotation to craft unique artworks
- Reflect on how chance operations can reveal hidden relationships between disparate topics
The workshop demonstrates how simple tools can be used to challenge linear narratives and how negotiation between contrasting themes leads to surprising results.
